Every makeup lover knows liquid lipsticks had a huge BOOM in the market. Pretty much EVERY brand out there has their own line of liquid lipsticks and it can be VERY overwhelming, don’t you think? I too was lost and after going through a million reviews and swatch videos – and testing out some myself – I decided to create this informal guide to help YOU!

There are THREE basic types of matte liquid lipsticks:

THE MOUSSE

The mousse is a thicker formula that looks whipped. They are light weight and comfortable.

Examples: NYX Soft Mattes and Buxom’s Wild Whipped Liquid Lipstick.

Pros and Cons

  • Comfortable
  • Less Drying
  • Less Lasting Power
  • Not Smudge Proof
  • Creamy

THE LIQUID

The real liquid lipstick,smooth, thin.

Examples: Jeffree Star’s Velour, Lime Crime Velvetines, Kylie Jenner Lip Kits, Coloured Rain Liquid Lipsticks.

Pros and Cons

  • Smudge Proof
  • Drying
  • Long Lasting
  • Can be Patchy
  • Can be Tacky
  • Slippery application

THE OLD SCHOOL

Forms a very glued on long lasting layer on the lips.  Usually Comes with a gloss or balm for comfort. Examples: Revlon Color Stay Liquid Lipstick and Maybelline Superstay 24h Color Lipstick.

Pros and Cons

  • Flakes off
  • Completely smudge proof
  • Uncomfortable
  • The hardest to remove
  • “Requires” balm or gloss on top
  • Less color selection

WHICH ONE IS THE BEST?

It all depends on your needs and preferences. If you have finicky lips that can’t handle drying formulas then go for the mousse. If all you want is long lasting and not per say a matte flat finish then go for the old school. If you want a very matte long lasting liquid lipstick and don’t mind the dryness then go for the liquid!

Personally the liquidly ones are my favorite because my ultimate goal is completely matte lips with no transfer. And I can handle the dryness thanks to this bad boy here! Besides the shades out there are to die for!

THE PERFECT APPLICATION

No matter what you choose there are few steps to looking wonderful in these and any lipstick for that matter!

Step 1

Exfoliate your Lips

Liquid Lipstick Guide

You don’t want any dry skin showing, do you? You can use a toothbrush or a sugar lip scrub!

Step 2

Lip Balm

Liquid Lipstick Guide

Apply a lip balm before you start your makeup and remove excess when it’s time to apply the lipstick, this way it will be more comfortable! See here for my favorite lip balm.

Step 3

Lipliner

Liquid Lipstick Guide

This step is optional but liquid lipsticks can be very difficult to apply especially the more liquidly ones as they can slip around or bleed while they are wet. To avoid a wonky lip line apply either a clear wax lipliner or a matching lipliner on the outer edge and fill in with the liquid lipstick.

Step 4

Concealer

Liquid Lipstick Guide

Crisp up the edges of that dark or bright lipstick you are wearing for a perfect finish. Use a concealer brush and a smooth concealer to cover up any problems.

You are done! You now have perfect lips.
