After the confident introduction of himself and his new furry upper lip friend you start to wonder how does Lord Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) ever manages to do anything by himself AND have a business as an art criminal that actually pays him money enough for his lavish lifestyle together with his commandeering wife Johanna (Gwyneth Paltrow). Perhaps the answer lies in Jock (Paul Bettany) his extremely loyal man servant and thug that seem to have advice and answers for everything but the insistent question from his Lord; “Will everything be alright in the end?” Either way, certainly the fact that he is actually broke and owes 8 million pounds to the government makes more sense now.

When a painting is stolen from an art cleaner, after she spent a long and odd 3 months on it, the whole world seems to be searching for it. Inspector Martland (EwanMcgregor) from Mi5 finds himself with no option but to ask for Mortdecai’s help to find it. And with other characters such as the very short lived Krampf (Jeff GoldblumI), with his nymphomaniac daughter Georgina (Olivia Munn), and a bunch of criminals, the story has a lot of potential that doesn’t quite pan out with its random action scenes, several male genitalia references and a mustache that becomes the subject one time too many.

Similarly styled like The Grand Budapest Hotel, it’s a good movie to watch. There’s been too much hate around it, exacerbated from the constant dislike revolving around Johnny Depp and the fact that he always plays “the same characters”. Yes, all his more crazier characters are out there, but besides that similarity there is very distinct differences between each and every one of them, brilliantly created and played by Depp himself.

Could the writers have given a bit more effort and brought this movie up to its proper home run potential? Without a doubt! But instead the script wastes the lovely talent it managed to cast. Still, although everywhere you see states this movie as a flop, for me it’s a personal win and I urge anyone who is a fan of Johnny Depp to watch it.
Cheerio!
